Seri Begawan - Bruneians can do it. That's the optimistic
view of Mr Vincent Pao, the owner of Brunei's latest IT store.
And he has proved it. He has well over 40 staffs - all of
them Bruneians.
Mr Pao of Concepts said: "It is more practical to hire locals
as the environment is more favourable to them as if it & their
second home."
As the largest IT retailer in Brunei, the staff employed have
grown over the years since it was first established anti Mr
Pao has hired Bruneians from various backgrounds from the
unemployed, ITB and MTSSR students, UBD undergraduates to
Microsoft Certified Technology Specialists.
He says Bruneians are now mostly technologically educated
therefore as customers they are more likely to do `smart shopping'
and surveying as to what product they would like to buy.
Thus, influencing him to hire Bruneians to create a more friendly
and interactive environment with the customers.
Mr Pao says good leadership and communication, sense of direction
of staff and fair play is what brings the organisation more
closely.
He also stresses the practicality of hiring locals as this
would mean there would not be the provision of housing for
foreign employees, air travel to and from their homelands,
savings on recruitment agency fees and the delay in processing
their recruitments.
Other than that, handling the emotional stress ranging from
homesickness to the misunderstandings or miscommunications
that may occur as well.
Furthermore, in keeping his staff closer together he has organised
each and every Wednesday badminton games at Fitness Zone or
at the indoor stadium after work thinking that a healthy staff
means a healthy company.
In addition, he exposes his staff to exhibitions overseas,
allows them for holidays, and if need be, training abroad.

not try Bruneians?" -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
